Abutilon pictum - Thompsonii

Colorful, variegated, and full of old-fashioned charm, Abutilon pictum ‘Thompsonii’ brings glowing lantern-like flowers and beautifully mottled foliage to warm garden spaces. Commonly known as flowering maple, this ornamental shrub is loved for its maple-shaped leaves splashed with yellow and green, along with nodding apricot-orange blooms that add tropical warmth to patios, sheltered borders, courtyard gardens, and large containers.

Growing into a graceful, upright shrub, Abutilon pictum ‘Thompsonii’ makes a striking foliage accent, container specimen, or colorful feature near a porch, pathway, or window where its flowers can be enjoyed up close. The variegated leaves pair wonderfully with purple salvias, fuchsias, coleus, begonias, ferns, ornamental grasses, dark-leaved dahlias, and other shade-tolerant or part-sun plants that create a lush, layered garden display. Its nectar-rich flowers are also especially appealing to hummingbirds and other pollinators.

Plant Abutilon pictum ‘Thompsonii’ in full sun to part shade with rich, well-drained soil and regular water during active growth. In hot inland gardens, afternoon shade helps keep foliage looking fresh. Distinctive, long-blooming, and wonderfully ornamental, this variegated flowering maple is a beautiful choice for gardeners who love foliage, flowers, and a little tropical flair.
