Lysimachia atropurpurea - Burgundy Loosestrife

Not all loosestrifes are garden thugs, and Lysimachia atropurpurea proves it beautifully. This marvelous non-invasive burgundy loosestrife sends up elegant stems of rich claret, gooseneck-like flower spikes that make visitors stop, point, and ask what on earth that gorgeous thing is.

With silvery-green foliage and deep wine-colored blooms, Burgundy Loosestrife brings unusual texture and moody color to perennial borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, containers, and foliage-focused plantings. The arching flower spikes are striking in bouquets and pair beautifully with grasses, yarrow, poppies, salvias, pale pink flowers, cream blooms, and silver-leaved companions. It has an old-world, romantic look without the aggressive behavior associated with some loosestrife relatives.

Plant Lysimachia atropurpurea in full sun to light shade with well-drained soil and regular water. Deadhead or cut for bouquets to keep the plant looking fresh. Unusual, elegant, and wonderfully garden-worthy, this is a foliage and flower treasure. Explore more distinctive texture plants in our Lysimachia collection.

The narrow, rippled leaves are nearly as distinctive as the flowers, giving the plant movement and silvery contrast even before the burgundy spikes open. It is generally short-lived, but its unusual combination of shape and color makes every season worthwhile.
