Amaranthus cruentus - Hot Chili

Bold, fiery, and wonderfully architectural, Amaranthus cruentus ‘Hot Chili’ erupts with upright plumes in blazing crimson, scarlet, and deep chili red. The richly colored flower spikes rise above lush green foliage with undeniable tropical energy, bringing height, movement, and late-season drama precisely when the summer garden could use another jolt of excitement.

Fast-growing plants reach about 4–5 feet tall and make a splendid exclamation point in sunny borders, cutting beds, and large containers. The substantial stems and long-lasting plumes are excellent for fresh arrangements and dry beautifully for autumn projects. Birds investigate the maturing seedheads, while the red flowers look especially delicious beside ornamental grasses, sunflowers, lime-green foliage, dusky dahlias, and hot-colored zinnias.

Give ‘Hot Chili’ full sun, well-drained average-to-moderately-rich soil, and regular water while young. Once established, it handles summer heat with impressive composure. Pinching young plants can encourage branching where a bushier form is wanted; leave them unpinched for a stronger central spire. Stake only in very windy locations or exceptionally rich soil. This flamboyant amaranth absolutely refuses to disappear into the background. Find more bold warm-season performers in our Annuals collection.
