Kalanchoe tomentosa

Kalanchoe tomentosa, often called Panda Plant, is beloved for its irresistibly fuzzy, velvety leaves trimmed in rich chocolate-brown. The soft foliage gives the plant a charmingly odd, almost storybook appearance that makes it stand out beautifully in succulent collections. We love how easy it is to grow, asking only for bright light, sharply drained soil, and occasional watering. Its upright form makes it perfect for containers, sunny windowsills, and warm garden spaces. Over time it forms a small shrubby succulent about 12" to 24" tall and wide, adding wonderful texture and a bit of mischief to succulent plantings.

The leaves are the whole show: thick, silvery gray-green, and covered in fine hairs that make them look and feel like tiny felted ears. Chocolate-brown markings along the margins sharpen the outline of every leaf, and the upright stems gradually form a sculptural plant about 12–18 inches tall. It is a marvelous foil for glossy, spiky, or jewel-toned succulents.

Panda Plant is especially satisfying in a container where its texture can be appreciated up close. Bright light keeps the growth compact and the markings strong. The one important rule is drainage—its fuzzy leaves may look cuddly, but soggy soil is emphatically not its friend.
