Monardella villosa - Coyote Mint

Minty, fragrant, and beautifully useful, Monardella villosa brings soft native charm and steady pollinator appeal to sunny California gardens. Commonly known as coyote mint, this aromatic California native perennial forms a low, spreading presence with fresh herbal foliage and clusters of lavender-purple flowers that bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects love. Tucked along paths, dry borders, rocky slopes, native plant gardens, and water-wise landscapes, it offers a wonderfully natural look with plenty of garden value.

Growing approximately 12 to 18 inches tall and spreading about 2 feet wide, Monardella villosa works beautifully as a small-scale groundcover, edging plant, or textural companion beneath oaks and among other drought-tolerant California natives. Its soft flowers and fragrant foliage pair wonderfully with California poppies, native buckwheats, yarrow, sages, penstemons, clarkias, grasses, and silver foliage, creating a layered, pollinator-friendly garden display with color, movement, and habitat value.

Plant Monardella villosa in full sun to light shade with well-drained soil and low to moderate water once established. Avoid heavy, wet conditions, especially where drainage is poor, and give it room to settle into its relaxed, natural form. Fragrant, resilient, deer-resistant, and wonderfully supportive of native pollinators, coyote mint is a beautiful choice for gardeners who want useful California native plants with effortless charm.
