Felicia Echinata

It was love at first sight with Felicia echinata, a South African native with glossy little leaves, cheerful blue daisies, and just enough spiky texture to make things interesting. Growing about 1.5–2 feet tall and wide, this uncommon perennial forms a tidy, rounded shrublet covered in bright, open-faced blooms.

Also known as Prickly Felicia, it is lovely in coastal plantings, cottage borders, pollinator gardens, containers, and mixed beds where its clear blue flowers can sparkle among warmer colors. Orange, yellow, white, silver, and apricot companions all make that blue look even bluer, while the compact habit keeps the plant easy to place in smaller spaces.

The flowers may be dainty, but the plant has a crisp, slightly bristly character that keeps it from looking overly sweet. At about 12–18 inches tall in many garden settings, it can thread through stronger colors without disappearing. It is an especially appealing rarity for gardeners who collect South African plants—or anyone who simply cannot resist a genuinely good blue daisy.

Give Felicia echinata sun, good drainage, and room to form its naturally rounded shape. The long bloom season can stretch from spring through fall in favorable conditions, supplying a steady scatter of blue rather than one brief flower show. Explore more South African plants.
