Nicotiana alata - Saratoga Lime

Fresh, glowing, and unexpectedly sophisticated, Nicotiana alata ‘Saratoga Lime’ lights up the garden with soft chartreuse-green flowers that seem to shimmer in evening light. The starry blooms float above compact, bushy plants and release a sweet fragrance as the day cools, making this delightful flowering tobacco especially lovely near patios, pathways, and outdoor seating areas. The unusual green coloring blends beautifully with virtually everything nearby while adding a wonderfully modern twist to old-fashioned cottage garden charm.

Growing about 10-14" tall and wide, ‘Saratoga Lime’ thrives in full sun to partial shade with regular moisture and well-drained soil. It blooms continuously from late spring into autumn with minimal care and attracts hummingbirds, bees, and nighttime pollinators alike. We adore using it as a softening filler among vivid jewel tones or dark foliage plants, where the luminous flowers create a magical cooling effect. Easygoing, fragrant, and endlessly versatile, this elegant little annual quickly becomes a favorite wherever it is planted.

Compared to the 'Lime Green' variety, 'Saratoga Lime' is a modern, compact F1 hybrid specifically bred for neat, predictable growth and an all-day floral display. While 'Lime Green' is tall and highly fragrant with evening-opening blooms, 'Saratoga Lime' tops out at a tidy 10 to 14 inches and features upward-facing flowers that stay wide open even in the intense midday sun. Although it trades away the strong scent of heirloom varieties, its uniform size and vibrant, continuous color make it an ideal, low-maintenance choice for the front of the border or container gardens.
